Viral Poetry Series

In the process of conducting research for The Ride or Die Project, Amanda Parris began reading the poetry of Black women writers who were developing works in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s to get a sense of the voice and energy of the time.

She quickly became swept away in the beauty, passion and urgency of the period and wanted to share the feelings that emerged…feelings of possibility, hope, belief in our capacity to transform the world…with the world.

Instead of writing a series of Facebook statuses featuring quotes of the poems as she normally would, she decided to ask people she ran into, people in her community, people she respected, to choose a poem and read it on camera.

The series is called “…I feel, therefore I can be free” and it is an invitation to feel and in that feeling experience the possibility of freedom.
